Born William Alexander Clarke, in the parish of Westmoreland, Jamaicathe son of an Irish planter Robert Constantine Clarke and a Jamaican mother, Mary Clarke, although he is to have stated that his mother was actually Taino. Not much is known about his early life, he left Jamaica in and allegedly took the name ‘Bustamante.

Sir Alexander Bustamante was born on Febru in a little district known as Blenheim, Hanover, Jamaica. His father was an Irish planter named Robert Constantine Clarke, and his mother was a Jamaican of mixed blood named Mary Clarke nee Wilson.
